5 things about styling my house I wish I knew sooner

Styling your home can be an exciting but overwhelming process. It’s easy to get caught up in trends, impulse buys, and trying to fill every corner of the house with something new. Looking back, there are five key lessons I wish I had known earlier, and these have completely changed the way I approach home styling. From focusing on a few timeless principles to embracing personalization, here’s what I learned.

1. Space Doesn’t Have to Be Filled
Less is truly more. Space doesn’t have to be filled to feel complete. Negative space (empty space) can actually make a room feel more open, balanced, and calming. Instead of cramming too much into a room, prioritize a focal point, like a statement piece of furniture or artwork, and allow everything else to complement it. Open space creates room to breathe and makes the important elements stand out even more

2. Start with a Neutral Base
Starting with a neutral base is a game changer. Neutral colors like whites, greys, beiges, soft tones and wood create a timeless backdrop that works with any style. Once the base is set, you can easily add personality through accessories like throw cushions, rugs, or wall art, which can be swapped out seasonally or when you want a change. A neutral base keeps the room grounded and allows for more flexibility.

3. Shop Strategically: Invest in Timeless, Quality Pieces
It’s important to shop strategically and invest in timeless, quality pieces. This doesn’t mean you need to break the bank, but focusing on well-made, classic furniture and decor will pay off in the long run. These pieces form the foundation of your home and can adapt to changing trends. For example, a high-quality sofa or dining table will stand the test of time, while accessories like pillows, throws, or artwork can be refreshed regularly.

4. Lighting Can Make or Break a Space
Lighting is one of the most crucial elements of home styling. It can completely transform the mood of a room. Layering different types of lighting—ambient, task, and accent—creates depth and highlights the best features of your decor. Table lamps, floor lamps, and even candles add warmth, while pendant lights or chandeliers can serve as statement pieces. Plus, choosing warm-toned bulbs over cool ones creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

5. Personalization is Key
Your home should tell your story. Personalization is the key to making your space truly yours. Incorporate elements that reflect your personality, hobbies, and memories. Whether it’s family photos, artwork from your travels, or handmade items, these personal touches give your home warmth and soul. It’s okay to mix trends with sentimental or quirky items—they’re what make your space unique.

Looking back, these five lessons have completely transformed the way I style my home. Styling your home doesn’t have to be daunting—it can be a fun, creative adventure when you know a few key things from the start. So, don’t stress about getting it perfect from day one! Enjoy the process, experiment, and watch as your home evolves into a place you love more and more every day!
